Building cultural bridges between the Gran Teatre del Liceu and its American friends and patrons to promote the operatic exchange

Barcelona’s opera house Gran Teatre del Liceu was founded in 1847 and stands in La Rambla, in the center of the city. The Liceu is the result of the initiative of a group of entrepreneurs of the city at the time. Since then, it has hosted the leading artists, orchestras and ballets of the world, including the regular visits of American companies and artists. The Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation wants to continue this tradition of patronage in the current global environment to engage its American friends and patrons to encourage and sustain the operatic exchange between the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the United States.

The Liceu premieres this sparkling turquerie after its World premiere in La Scala in 1814. Christof Loy returns to the Liceu to direct this production starring Nino Machaidze and Ildebrando d’Arcangelo. Víctor Pablo Pérez conducts this Rossini opera with diabolically quick tempo and fast moving plot. From May 18 to June 6

Rolando Villazón returns to Barcelona with one of his signature roles at the Liceu: Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore. Daniele Callegari leads a cast that includes Aleksandra Kurzak, Ambrogio Maestri, Juan Martín-Royo, among others. The Liceu’s popular production by Mario Gas sets the action in a charming 1930’s Italian village during the fascist period. From May, 27 to June, 5.
